Synopsis: Mysterious Short Stories on WordsAllMine. A short story on mystical connection of events which link our karmas.
It must have been a bad start of the day for a girl who just stepped on the street to go for work. She looked on her left and let a bike coming from behind pass by. Then she started to cross the road, but another scooty was coming behind the bike in the center of the road which she had failed to notice. By the time, the girl saw it approaching towards her, it was late for her to retreat. Neither could the rider speed down within the short spell of reaction.
Wham! The scooty collided tossing the girl across the road.
“Why brother?” The girl whined with pleading eyes while her father who witnessed the whole scene came out of the house.
But as he reached there, the surgeon who was to operate his child was not available. The man begged the other doctors and the assistants to start the operation, but they could not do anything in the absence of the in-charge. The poor man, when inquired the receptionist, was told that the doctor had to leave for an unavoidable emergency at home but would be arriving in an hour. The man had to wait because it was holiday and the few doctors who had attended the hospital were occupied.
The man walked towards the ICU and stood outside the closed door, looking at his child lying like a lifeless entity on the mercy of the giant machines connected to his small body. The man started sobbing for not being able to do anything for his child. His weeping heart wanted the God’s wrath to fall upon the doctor whose carelessness was making his son fight for life.
The doctor who was supposed to operate the man’s son could not come because of the sudden tragedy he had confronted the very morning. His wife, who was suffering from depression for the last two years was found dead in her room. The large quantities of phosphide found in her blood samples implicated the consumption of rat poison. The doctor was in a terrible shock and agony. But he was still trying to be able to reach the hospital on time and attend the emergency case of the 10-year old boy.
After the funeral rites got over and he was just about to get inside his car, a motorcycle stopped near the doctor with a jerk and a boy in mid twenties riding on it snatched away the gold chain he was carrying in his hand. Had it been money, it would have been endurable. But the chain was the most precious thing for the doctor being it the only souvenir that belonged to his wife.
The motorcyclist stowed the gold chain in his pocket and drove towards his home with happiness of fulfilling his mission. He was a poor orphan whose parents had died in riots long ago when he and his younger sister were small. Somehow, he managed his living by selling wares on the roadside but never chose an illicit way in his life. Suddenly, he had to get his sister married for which he had been arranging the money for last two months. He took loans from friends and bank but still the money was not as much as the dowry boy’s family had demanded. Since, the time of marriage had approached too close, he had to do something in order to arrange the money on time. He shook the chain in his hand and gleaned that it would be enough to meet his need.
But as he reached his home, he was appalled to see his sister come running towards him in sobs. The boy had refused to marry her just two days before marriage. What could be the reason other than money he could not arrange by then. His sister loathed the boy for betraying her true love for the sake of money.
But there was something which had not met the eyes. The boy had refused because he was recently diagnosed with blood cancer and didn’t want the girl to live the life of a widow. If he told the truth to the girl she would not step back. Besides, he wanted to make sure that the girl marries somebody else, not him.
It was the initial stage of cancer. But the doctor had told him that the chemotherapy could only save him for just few more years. Suddenly, his life was limited and his heart was broken on losing the girl he loved the most in the world.
In the limited time, he wanted to do as much as he could. The foremost thought was to make a provision of the monetary support that his family could avail after his death.
He went to an insurance agency to buy life insurance. The girl who was his agent got his signature on the authorization letter which declared that the party nominated by the undersigned shall get all the amount of insurance after his death.
But the authorization letter didn’t disclose the name of the nominees. Neither did he have the mind to check the integrity of the papers he was signing. As soon as he left, the girl filled the names of nominees by herself. The name was that of her elder brother who would now be the official benefactor of the money, which the cancer patient would leave after his death. While the insurance company would give a small amount in the name of the condolence to his family . The girl was certain that no one would get to know of the fraud she committed.
But, the next day as the girl, the insurance agent left the home for her office, a scooty came running and hit her hard in the leg. The money that she would obtain out of the fraud insurance scheme got frittered away in her fracture treatment !
